What is Judo?

Judo is a martial art, based in the spirit of mutual prosperity and on the core principle of efficient use of physical and mental energy. Originally developed in Japan through the founder's study of traditional Japanese jujitsu, Kodokan Judo was founded by Jigoro Kano in 1882. Judo is an Olympic sport since 1964.


What is a Gi?

A Judo Gi is a uniform worn over your normal workout clothing. The best workout clothing for this purpose is tight-fitting spandex. The Gi is loose-fitting heavy cotton jacket and pants in the style of a Japanese kimono. The jacket is secured with a belt or "Obi" in japanese.


What can I expect at my first class?

Classes are designed to accommodate the full range of skill and experience levels. Expect to have fun and be challenged physically and mentally. The pace is not fast but we keep moving throughout the entire class. Water breaks are built in and we recomend you bring a filled water bottle; a drinking fountain is available.


Is a women-only class available?

Our head instructor is female. We aim to offer women-only classes beginning in Fall semester 2023. Please express your interest to head instructor Theresa Lawler via email to: sensei@kestreljudo.org.


Are private lessons available?

We aim to offer semi-private (2-4 students) lessons in future as our dojo expands. Check back in May 2023 for more information.
